Mesopotamia—the land between the great rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates—is widely regarded as the birthplace of civilization. It was here that humanity first built cities, invented writing, developed the wheel, codified laws, and established complex societies. Walking through the ancient sites of Eridu, Uruk, Ur of the Chaldees, and Babylon is to journey through the origins of human history.
Some believe the Garden of Eden was located within this fertile crescent. Iraq, the heartland of ancient Sumer, Babylonia, and Assyria, has also been a pivotal stage for biblical narratives and historic empires. Throughout the centuries, this land has witnessed the rise and fall of great powers—from the Persians and Alexander the Great, to the Islamic Caliphates, the Mongols, and the Ottoman Empire.
In the modern era, Iraq declared independence in 1932. Visitors today can trace layers of history—both ancient and modern—through its cities, monuments, and landscapes. From the ruins of mighty empires to the legacy of Saddam Hussein and the Coalition presence, the country offers a deeply immersive historical experience.
Warm greetings from Iraq!
I am deeply honored to have served as the private local guide for William and Anne during their journey through Iraq. Their exploration led to the creation of the remarkable book, Unforgotten: Ancient Cities from a Distant Past, where they graciously mentioned me in the Iraq chapter.
This book is more than just a collection of photographs; it’s a visual and historical journey through 130 ancient cities across 25 countries, highlighting their unique stories and enduring legacies. For those passionate about ancient history and the enduring spirit of civilizations, this book is a treasure trove waiting to be explored.
